There has been such an outpour of support within the Brave Gown community today! I can't thank you all enough who reached out today to give a nod to Mac and to the journey. It is definitely a day that will go down in the records as one of my favorite memories in life!
Many of you know that Brave Gowns were created in memory of my brother, Mac, who was diagnosed with two types of Leukemia at 9 years-old on Halloween day in 2001. We have been working hard to make sure we give back to a community that does so much for families at a time that is truly so scary and intense, that it's hard for me to even fathom that the parents hearts and souls can endure such highs and lows throughout their child's treatment. During treatment an art therapist comes and visits and the children draw portraits to help doctors see where children are mentally. Mac was known for his long, blonde hair, so it was quite a surprise, when Mac's self portrait was shown to us with ONE tiny little yellow strand of hair sticking straight up from the center of his head. I keep Mac's self portrait in a window right above my desk. It brings a smile every day.
Over the past year, we have been working on an app that will allow a Brave Gown template to be used for art therapy We will take the artwork hand drawn by the child and create a Brave Gown directly from the template and by adding the "Made By" circle, we will have each child sign their artwork personally! Having Mac's little signature is one of my favorite things I have, so it was such a blessing to watch it get transferred from a card he gave me for my birthday, to now be used as the sample for the first ever Art Therapy Brave Gown! You never know how meaningful little things like a signature of a child is, until it is the last gift you ever receive from them!
And just when I thought things couldn't get more exciting, within the app, we will also be able to add photos to Brave Gowns! Family, classmates and friends can now put their favorite pictures on a Brave Gowns as gift!! Whether it's a picture of their entire class, their best friends, their sports teams or favorite pets, a child will now be able to wear them right over their hearts!
Look for the announcement of the launch to come later this week. If you have any questions please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Have a safe Halloween! Hug your children tight and let them have that one extra piece of candy for the children that didn't get to go out and Trick or Treat today!
