When Danica was in the hospital, we were carried through many difficult times with with the kindness of others. Kindness from family, friends, community, and medical staff yes, but also SO much from STRANGERS! These strangers were really just friends I haven’t met yet.
It takes so many hands to hold up a family going through crisis. Sometimes support comes to families directly; sometimes for us, it was through child life, toy drives, or organizations, and sometimes it was so personal to Danica herself. Brave Gowns were one of those moments.
I remember when my bff sent her a package--her first Brave Gown! It was something that was truly her own. Then Summer German, who founded Brave Gowns in honor of her brother Mac, sent another gown with a note, "I think Danica needs this one." She did.
Regular clothes can’t accommodate IVs and other necessary medical interventions, but there is something about giving a child autonomy over their body, and a way to express their identity when they are often so utterly helpless in the hospital. It put a smile on Danica’s face to choose her gown.
I would like to help Summer to get 1000 gowns to kids suffering life threatening illnesses and diseases before Christmas. The donations will go to a waiting list of hospitals with big needs. From there, gowns will be delivered to children as needed. (Trust me, they know when and who to give it to. I still remember the warmth of unexpectedly receiving just the thing we didn’t know we needed!)
